I WAS THERE - SURVIVOR SERIES 92

Here's me with my best friend in 2nd grade Matt Dellisanti, my brother Joe, and my dad at Survivor Series 92 at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, OH. I don't remember what was more disappointing, Doink not giving us a balloon animal or the fact that the only Survivor Series-Style match that year was Money Inc. & The Beverly Brothers vs. Natural Disasters & The Nasty Boys.

These would be the first in a long-list of unexpercted, unlpleasant happenings that were close to crushing my 8 year old self's dreams. Would my first ever live Pay Per View experience end in disapointment?

The Survivor Series has always been my favorite event (next to the Royal Rumble) because of the classic tag team elimination matches. I was only 3 years old when the Survivor Series debuted in 1987 at the Richfield Coliseum (an hour from my house) so I was too young to ask my parents to go but when I found out the event was returning to Richfield in 1992 I was pumped...until the card started to take shape.

Bret Hart defending the WWF Championship against Shawn Michaels? Ok, there was a title match at the previous year's Survivor Series in '91 (Undertaker vs. Hulk Hogan) so I figured maybe this was the new thing.

Then the Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage were set to take on Ric Flair and Razor Ramon. Well, alright I guess - maybe they're saving the traditional Survivor Series matches for the undercard.

Boy was I wrong...

Rick Martel vs. Tatanka

Virgil vs. Yokozuna

The Headshrinkers vs. High Energy

The Undertaker vs. Kamala in a Cask...I mean Coffin Match

Nailz vs. The Big Boss Man in a Nightstick Match

Then finally we get a Survivor Series Match - The Natural Disasters & The Nasty Boys vs. The Beverly Brothers & Money Inc.

WHAT THE FUCK????

Also as we know The Warrior left prior to the event and the powers that be had to scramble to find a suitable replacement and came up with the idea to have Mr. Perfect turn on Ric Flair and Bobby Heenan and join forces with the Macho Man. This kind of came out of nowhere but my brother and I were always big Mr. Perfect fans so this was a welcome change. Even with the lack of Survivor matches and the sudden change in the main event, we were still super excited to go to our first-ever Pay Per View.

What stands out to me about this event was these were by far the best seats we were able to get up to that point. C'mon, floor seats right on the aisle?

I remember arriving and seeing Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan up on their announcer's platform. We kept walking further and further closer to the ring and I couldn't believe how close our seats actually were.

For some crazy reason one match I was really looking forward to was The British Bulldog vs. The Mountie. The Bulldog was set to defend the Intercontinental Championship against the Canadian Law Officer until Shawn Michaels ruined all that by defeating Davey Boy on Saturday Night's Main Event.

At the time the Bulldog was my favorite wrestler so to show my support I made a British Bulldog sign that I would hold up and likely get on camera. Even though the Bulldog lost the title I still thought this match would be happening. Of course as we know now the Bulldog failed a drug test prior to the event and was let go from the company. So there I am, looking like a fucking idiot carrying around a British Bulldog sign that I spent 5 good minutes of my life making...another disappointment.

The matches themselves were extremely disappointing. They speak for themselves so watch them...or don't.

Ultimately the massive pile of disappointments that mounted up were washed away with every wrestler we got to touch on their way to and from the ring. We even got to touch the casket before the very first casket match in WWE history.

The highlight of the night was during the Perfect/Savage tag match. Savage was getting his ass kicked so bad that Mr. Perfect was unsure if he made the right decision to become Macho's "Perfect Partner". He left the ring and made his way down the aisle to go to the back and leave Savage by himself. He almost made it all the way to the entrance before he started to second guess his decision to leave. Perfect, unsure what to do, looked to the fans. There we were, my brother and I, with all the passion we could muster up - telling Mr. Perfect to go back to the ring. He looked right at us and then made his way back to the match to save his partner.

We really felt that we had a hand in helping sway Perfect to help save Macho which made us feel like we were on top of the world. We helped make WWE history, ended up on-camera, plus we got to see Santa Claus - how could we be disappointed with that?
